Getting to Know the Olympians: Softball Pitchers

If you’ve flipped on ESPN at all this past weekend, you’ve seen the Women’s College World Series. Texas A&M and Arizona State are battling for the championship as I type this. Ridiculously fast pitches, faster baserunners, home runs – you’ve seen it all on the college diamond. If you’ve enjoyed the WCWS at all, you will love Team USA. To give you an idea how good Team USA is, they beat Arizona, the seven seed for the WCWS, 16-0.

Go ahead. Make jokes.

This team doesn’t just dominate collegians; they dominate the world. USA softball has won every gold medal awarded in the Olympics. One of the reasons why the USA is so damn good is the dominant pitching. Get to know these gals – after the jump.

Everyone knows about Jennie Finch – tall, beautiful, blonde, talented. Blah blah blah. The mother of a two-year-old son, she is more than a pretty face. Last summer, Finch threw 31 innings, which included 49 strikeouts and 9 hits.

Cat Osterman strikes you out and then laughs at you. Ouch.

Lisa Fernandez, an Olympic Gold medalist in ’96, ’00 and ’04, not only is an ace pitcher, but she batted .545 during the last Olympiad. Finch and Fernandez will be joined by Texas leftie Cat Osterman. At the 2007 World Cup, Osterman threw 22 strikeouts.

Two pitchers making their Olympic debuts are Alicia Hollowell and Monica Abbott. You may remember Monica from her dominating NCAA performance last year. She now owns the career and single season records for victories, strikeouts and shutouts.

Yeah – we’re kind of good. Considering that this is the last time softball will be played in the Olympics, enjoy this team, and the way they will decimate the field this August.
